Chauncey DeVega, Salon (2018-07-09). Former Intelligence Officer Malcolm Nance: We're 'on the Cusp' of 'Losing the American Constitutional Republic Forever'. alternet.org Putin is Trump's "handler" and we're in a "Benedict Arnold moment. " | The crisis that has befallen America under Donald Trump's presidency is not ripped from the pages of a John le Carré or Jason Matthews spy novel. It is all too real. The U. S. Senate Intelligence Committee has unanimously endorsed the intelligence community's conclusion that the Russian government interfered with the 2016 presidential election, with the goal of electing Donald Trump and undermining American democracy. Former CIA director John Brennan agrees that Vladimir Putin commanded his spies and other agents to assist Donald Trump so that he would defeat Hillary Clinton. Brennan also believes that Putin may be blackmailing Trump as a means of forcing the president to do his bidding. Justice Department special counsel Robert Mueller has indicted numerous people in connection with Russia's interference in the 2016 presidential election and related criminal. . .

Whitney Webb (2018-07-09). Is Hillary Clinton Preparing for a Return to Electoral Politics? mintpressnews.com NEW YORK — Speculation is mounting that former Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton is seeking to make a "comeback" and challenge Donald Trump a second time in the next U.S. presidential election of 2020. Rumors of another Clinton campaign in the works comes amid the former candidate's recent uptick in public appearances and fund-raising appeals. | Clinton's recent return to the public arena coincided with her efforts to challenge Trump's "zero tolerance" immigration policy, particularly the scandal caused by separations of migrant families at the U.S. border. Even though Clinton has long advocated for building a border fence and similar "zero tolerance" immigration measures comparable to those of Trump, she used the outrage to launch her return to the public eye, raising more than $1.5 million for separated families. | Clinton has also used the recent resignation of Supreme Court…

Amanda Marcotte, Salon (2018-07-09). Here's How Decades of Paranoid Urban Legends About Gang Violence Led Voters to Believe Trump's MS-13 Lies. alternet.org Urban legends about gangs frequently get support from the right-wing media. | President Donald Trump appears to have settled on a campaign strategy to defeat Democrats in the 2018 midterms and to justify his escalating efforts to kick out every non-white immigrant he can. He's told his base of aging white suburbanites and rural residents that a gang called MS-13 has overrun the country. It's unsafe even for white people to leave their homes, the president implies, lest they get murdered by roving bands of marauding Latino immigrants. "A vote for the Democrats in November is a vote to let MS-13 run wild in our communities," Trump claimed in one of his who-are-you-calling-a-fascist rallies last week in Montana. On June 30, Trump tweeted: "I have watched ICE liberate towns from the grasp of MS-13," which was a blatant and easily debunked. . .

Merula Furtado (2018-07-09). The US White Nationalist Movement Is Attempting to Build International Allies. truthout.org The last year has been a reality check for the white nationalist movement in the US after riding high through its infiltration of the Trumpian Republicans. Nonetheless, the movement is regrouping and even attempting to reach out to international allies. | An open fascist movement in the US had not seen such heights in decades. Last year's bloody "Unite the Right" rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, for instance, was the largest white supremacist rally of its kind in the country in at least a generation. But the fallout came hard and swift as the nation refused to give the white nationalist movement a pass as its ranks grew. While the aftermath of Charlottesville hit the "alt-right" and internet-focused neo-Nazis especially hard by universally "de-platforming" them, other parts of their movement had seen their communications shut down steadily over the preceding years. | One example…

Paul Rosenberg, Salon (2018-07-09). A History of Hypocrisy: Evangelicals Used to Be Pro-Choice — And the NRA Used to Be Pro-Gun Control. alternet.org Conservatives have made guns virtually synonymous with freedom, on one hand, while disparaging and demonizing women's reproductive freedom on the other. | For 40 years, a chorus of voices on the right has been clamoring for the repeal of Roe v. Wade, the 1973 Supreme Court decision that made abortion legal nationwide. Suddenly, Republicans and their allies don't want to talk about it. What the hell is going on? Profound dishonesty, obviously. But in many more ways than you might at first suppose. Eighty-one percent of white evangelicals voted for an unrepentant, lifelong playboy and sexual predator because he promised them judges who would impose theocratic law, based on a make-believe "'biblical view' that's younger than the Happy Meal," as Slacktivist blogger Fred Clark called it in 2012. In 1968, the NRA supported gun control and evangelicals largely supported abortion. But. . .

Protesters Heckle Mitch McConnell in Kentucky Restaurant Parking Lot. truthdig.com Less than two weeks after Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao—who is married to the Republican senator— were confronted by protesters over the Trump administration's family separation policy, McConnell faced another crowd of critics in a parking lot of a Louisville, Kentucky restaurant. | According to a video posted to Facebook and a report by the Washington Post, as McConnell and two companions exited the Bristol Bar & Grille and walked toward their vehicle on Saturday, a group of Democratic Socialists and other protesters chanted "vote you out" and "abolish ICE." Referencing the administration's family separation policy, some shouted, "Where are the children?" and "Where are the babies, Mitch?" | The protesters had been tipped off about McConnell's lunch location on social media while hundreds of people demonstrated nearby outside Louisville's Immigration and Customs…

S. military and CIA contractor has been detaining dozens of migrant children inside a vacant Phoenix office building with dark windows, no kitchen and only a few toilets, according to a new investigation by Reveal from the Center for Investigative Reporting. Reveal learned about what some are calling the "black site" for migrant children after one local resident filmed children in sweatsuits being led into the building. The building was leased in March by MVM, a defense contractor that Reveal reports has received nearly $250 million in contracts to transport immigrant children since 2014. Stan Salett, Independent Media Institute (2018-07-09). Trump Is Creating a New World Order — Where China and Russia Will Be Its Leaders. alternet.org As Trump visits NATO and then Russia, we can't lose sight of how the old world order has been disrupted. | It has become commonplace to describe how we are experiencing dramatic disruptive changes in how we communicate, how we purchase and how we see the world around us. Gone are the chains of bookstores, many newspapers and magazines and many movie theaters. The telex, the fax, the phone booth, all gone. Retail stores and shopping malls are closing in record numbers. Once-powerful media companies are being sold off and dismembered. Our largest taxi companies own no cabs; our largest hotels own no rooms. We no longer use or need travel agents. Welcome to the Age of Disruption. We are living in a period famously described and anticipated by Joseph Schumpeter's monumental work, Capitalism, Socialism, and Democracy. In it Schumpeter coined the phrase,. . .

Meet People of Praise: Why This Far-Right Cult Shouldn't Be Allowed Anywhere Near the Supreme Court. alternet.org Its practices include requiring members to swear an oath of loyalty to the group and teaching that wives must be submissive to their husbands. | Tonight, President Donald Trump is scheduled to announce his nominee to replace Justice Anthony Kennedy on the U. S. Supreme Court—and one of the possible nominees is 46-year-old Amy Coney Barrett, a federal appellate judge. Trump has made it clear that he plans to nominate someone who is not only fiscally conservative, but a severe social conservative who would have no problem overturning the Roe v. Wade ruling of 1973. Barrett fits the bill, especially in light of her reported association with an extremist, predominantly Catholic group called People of Praise. When Trump nominated Barrett for a seat on the U. S. Giuliani appeared on Sunday morning talk shows, where the president's legal adviser urged Cohen to "tell the truth" about Russian election interference and the Trump Tower meeting with Donald Trump Jr. and Russian agents. Democracy Now! (2018-07-09). Human Rights Lawyer Jennifer Harbury on How Trump Is Punishing Cartels' Victims—Not Their Members. democracynow.org A federal judge will hold a hearing today on whether to delay Tuesday's deadline that mandated the reunification of all children under the age of 5 whom the Trump administration separated from their parents at the border. The Trump administration is claiming it needs more time to match children with their parents, including at least 19 parents who have already been deported. The American Civil Liberties Union says less than half of separated children under the age of 5 will be reunited by the Tuesday deadline. As Trump's "zero tolerance" policy crackdown continues, we speak with human rights lawyer Jennifer Harbury about how U.S. foreign policy has led to the violence that Central Americans are fleeing, and what happens when people follow the U.S. government's instructions and attempt to apply for political asylum at a legal port of entry. Jennifer Harbury has lived in the Rio Grande Valley in Texas for more than 40 years. She works with people fleeing violence in Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras, and has been active in the response to the Trump administration's "zero tolerance" policy.

Democracy Now! (2018-07-09). From CIA-Backed Wars to Cartel Violence: Inside the Roots of the Refugee Crisis in Central America. democracynow.org Across the United States, thousands of migrant children remain detained alone after the Trump administration forcibly separated them from their parents at the border. Yet, despite the news about the United States' human rights abuses of migrants, asylum seekers keep risking the dangerous journey to the United States. Texas-based human rights lawyer Jennifer Harbury has lived in the Rio Grande Valley in Texas for more than 40 years and has long worked with people fleeing violence in Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras. She also knows intimately the U.S. roots of this conflict. Her husband, Efraín Bámaca Velásquez, was a Mayan comandante and guerrilla who was disappeared after he was captured by the U.S.-backed Guatemalan army in the 1980s. After a long campaign, she found there was U.S. involvement in the cover-up of her husband's murder and torture. We speak with Jennifer Harbury in Brownsville, Texas, about this history and this U.S. involvement in today's conflicts in Central America.

Ian Reifowitz, Daily Kos (2018-07-08). Right-Wing Identity Politics Propelled Clarence Thomas to the Supreme Court — Will Trump Follow Suit And Appoint a Woman? alternet.org The selection of Clarence Thomas would be loudly echoed by Trump nominating Amy Barrett. | "Whaddya mean I'm anti-women? Look at my Supreme Court woman over here! " Can't you just imagine Donald Trump—wearing that sh*t-eating grin he's always got when he thinks he's being clever—saying something like that tomorrow night while presenting Amy Coney Barrett as his nominee to replace Anthony Kennedy on the Supreme Court? Trump could do that in an attempt to wipe away the stain of decades of misogyny, of his proclamations of pussy-grabbing, and of the dozen women who have publicly, and in great detail, accused him of sexual assault. He could do it just a few days after making light of the #MeToo movement while attacking Sen. Elizabeth Warren for having claimed American Indian ancestry—based on what her own ancestors told. . .

Sharpness is a virtue of a knife; civility is a virtue of liberal democracy. | Our liberal democracy, like similar regimes nowadays in other capitalist countries around the world, is not particularly democratic. | "Democracy" means rule of the people, the demos, as distinct from elites of one or another kind. In the United States and elsewhere, the word "democracy" long ago lost this class-specific connotation. In self-described democratic countries, the undifferentiated citizenry, the people as a whole, rule — in theory. This is not what the word meant in Greek antiquity, but it is close enough. | Or it would be if theory and practice were more in line. From Separating Families to Jailing Asylum Seekers, Trump Admin Accused of Criminalizing Migration. democracynow.org The Department of Health and Human Services still has not disclosed how many migrant children they are holding who have been separated from their parents at the border. Last week, HHS Secretary Alex Azar said 2,047 separated minors were still in the care of the Office of Refugee Resettlement. But the department has refused to give updated numbers, even though the Trump administration is facing a July 10 court-imposed deadline to reunite all separated children under the age of 5 with their parents. Meanwhile, CNN is reporting the Department of Homeland Security has been taking DNA samples of immigrant children. Immigration officials have reportedly been swabbing DNA from the cheeks of children as young as 2 months old, without consent, ostensibly in a bid to later reunite children with their parents. Gonzales herself was separated from her two teenage sons eight months before the Trump administration announced its "zero tolerance" policy. She records the details of other separated mothers despite not being allowed to have a notebook while detained. She then shares the information with the Las Americas Immigrant Advocacy Center in El Paso to help separated mothers locate their children. We speak with Linda Rivas, executive director and lead attorney of Las Americas Immigrant Advocacy Center.

Former Intelligence Officer Malcolm Nance: We're 'on the Cusp' of 'Losing the American Constitutional Republic Forever'
Chauncey DeVega, Salon | alternet.org | 2018-07-09
Putin is Trump's "handler" and we're in a "Benedict Arnold moment. Justice Department special counsel Robert Mueller has indicted numerous people in connection with Russia's interference in the 2016 presidential election and related criminal. . .

Is Hillary Clinton Preparing for a Return to Electoral Politics?
Whitney Webb | mintpressnews.com | 2018-07-09
NEW YORK — Speculation is mounting that former Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton is seeking to make a "comeback" and challenge Donald Trump a second time in the next U.S. presidential election of 2020.

Here's How Decades of Paranoid Urban Legends About Gang Violence Led Voters to Believe Trump's MS-13 Lies
Amanda Marcotte, Salon | alternet.org | 2018-07-09
Urban legends about gangs frequently get support from the right-wing media. On June 30, Trump tweeted: "I have watched ICE liberate towns from the grasp of MS-13," which was a blatant and easily debunked. . .

A History of Hypocrisy: Evangelicals Used to Be Pro-Choice — And the NRA Used to Be Pro-Gun Control
Paul Rosenberg, Salon | alternet.org | 2018-07-09
Conservatives have made guns virtually synonymous with freedom, on one hand, while disparaging and demonizing women's reproductive freedom on the other. But. . .

The US White Nationalist Movement Is Attempting to Build International Allies
Merula Furtado | truthout.org | 2018-07-09
The last year has been a reality check for the white nationalist movement in the US after riding high through its infiltration of the Trumpian Republicans.

Protesters Heckle Mitch McConnell in Kentucky Restaurant Parking Lot

Trump Is Creating a New World Order — Where China and Russia Will Be Its Leaders
Stan Salett, Independent Media Institute | alternet.org | 2018-07-09
As Trump visits NATO and then Russia, we can't lose sight of how the old world order has been disrupted. In it Schumpeter coined the phrase,. . .

Its practices include requiring members to swear an oath of loyalty to the group and teaching that wives must be submissive to their husbands. | Tonight, President Donald Trump is scheduled to announce his nominee to replace Justice Anthony Kennedy on the U. S. Supreme Court–and one of the possible nominees is 46-year-old Amy Coney Barrett, a federal appellate judge. S. From CIA-Backed Wars to Cartel Violence: Inside the Roots of the Refugee Crisis in Central America
Democracy Now! | democracynow.org | 2018-07-09
Across the United States, thousands of migrant children remain detained alone after the Trump administration forcibly separated them from their parents at the border.

Human Rights Lawyer Jennifer Harbury on How Trump Is Punishing Cartels' Victims–Not Their Members
Democracy Now! | democracynow.org | 2018-07-09
A federal judge will hold a hearing today on whether to delay Tuesday's deadline that mandated the reunification of all children under the age of 5 whom the Trump administration separated from their parents at the border. Right-Wing Identity Politics Propelled Clarence Thomas to the Supreme Court — Will Trump Follow Suit And Appoint a Woman?
Ian Reifowitz, Daily Kos | alternet.org | 2018-07-08

" Can't you just imagine Donald Trump–wearing that sh*t-eating grin he's always got when he thinks he's being clever–saying something like that tomorrow night while presenting Amy Coney Barrett as his nominee to replace Anthony Kennedy on the Supreme Court? Trump could do that in an attempt to wipe away the stain of decades of misogyny, of his proclamations of pussy-grabbing, and of the dozen women who have publicly, and in great detail, accused him of sexual assault. He could do it just a few days after making light of the #MeToo movement while attacking Sen. Elizabeth Warren for having claimed American Indian ancestry–based on what her own ancestors told. . .

In the United States and elsewhere, the word "democracy" long ago lost this class-specific connotation. In self-described democratic countries, the undifferentiated citizenry, the people as a whole, rule — in theory. Future of Affirmative Action in Jeopardy with New DOJ Order & Retirement of Justice Anthony Kennedy
Democracy Now! | democracynow.org | 2018-07-06

The move comes as the Trump administration is reportedly planning a challenge to Harvard University's admissions practices and as President Trump is nearing a decision on a Supreme Court nominee to replace retiring Justice Anthony Kennedy, who was long considered a swing vote on affirmative action. From Separating Families to Jailing Asylum Seekers, Trump Admin Accused of Criminalizing Migration
Democracy Now! | democracynow.org | 2018-07-05
The Department of Health and Human Services still has not disclosed how many migrant children they are holding who have been separated from their parents at the border. Rights groups have condemned the move, saying it could allow the federal government to track young immigrants for the rest of their lives. As Gov't Says 3,000 Migrant Children Are in Custody, Detained Mothers Are Organizing to Find Their Kids
Democracy Now! | democracynow.org | 2018-07-05
While the government struggles to reunite families who have been separated at the border under President Trump's "zero tolerance" policy, one detained Honduran woman has been organizing mothers behind bars to help find their children. The New Yorker reports that Mabel Gonzales has carefully documented the cases of mothers who have been separated from their children at a detention facility in El Paso, Texas, where she is currently jailed.

Young Leftist Candidates Are Breathing New Radicalism Into Stale Climate Politics
Kate Aronoff | theintercept.com | 2018-07-05
On the same day that Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez won an upset victory in her primary against Wall Street-friendly incumbent Joe Crowley — one of the most powerful Democrats in the House — a New Yorker nearly 50 years her senior fed rumors that he would seek the highest office in the land. | Aside from pouring $80 million to support a set of handpicked Democratic congressional hopefuls, billionaire former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg once again seems to be angling to run for president. Business Insider columnist Daniella Greenbaum took the opportunity to assert: "Democrats need to choose: Are they the party of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez or the party of Michael Bloomberg?" | She sided with the latter, but the question is a valid one. The differences between Bloomberg and Ocasio-Cortez are difficult to stuff into a single paragraph, but…

Concentration Camps in the U.S.: Andrea Pitzer Decries Tent Cities for Detaining Kids Without Trial
Democracy Now! | democracynow.org | 2018-07-05
Has the Trump administration set up concentration camps in Texas for migrants? The answer is yes, according to at least one expert: Andrea Pitzer, the author of "One Long Night: A Global History of Concentration Camps." In one of her latest articles, Pitzer writes, "While writing a book on camp history, I defined concentration camps as the mass detention of civilians without trial, usually on the basis of race, religion, national origin, citizenship, or political party, rather than anything a given individual has done. By this definition, the new child camp established in Tornillo, Texas, is a concentration camp." We speak with Andrea Pitzer in Washington, D.C.

As Trump 'Goes Nuclear' Against Iran And China, What's Next?
Alastair Crooke | iranian.com | 2018-07-04
At least it is clear; it's explicit. The "We're America, Bitch" formulation by an American official strips away the humbug of soft power. It's not about 'democracy' or 'freedom': the global universal order never was. And, President Trump, to his credit, makes no bones about it: Why apologise over American power? It's use it, or lose it […] | The post As Trump 'Goes Nuclear' Against Iran And China, What's Next? appeared first on The Iranian.
