Teodrose Fikre (2018-06-30). Justice Kennedy Let the Sheepdogs Out. truthdig.com The minute Justice Anthony Kennedy announced his retirement, recriminations and hand-wringing could be heard and seen around the nation. Thousands of partisans on all sides of the political divide latched on to the U.S. Supreme Court as a means to "sheepdog" their ever-pliable followers. Hyperbole ruled the day as both Democrats and Republicans took to the airwaves to declare the end of the republic as we know it should the "other side" win. | The Democrats were first out of the chute as they ran faster than Usain Bolt to turn the upcoming judicial hearings into a carrot for their adherents and a stick to bash anyone who dares think for themselves. Bereft of any ideas and exposed as a party of courtiers, they have become a one-trick donkey that stokes fear in order to bamboozle their voters. Justice Kennedy retiring was a…

On the evening of June 28, all three of the network's prime-time shows aired segments attacking the Abolish ICE movement, as did Fox & Friends the next morning. As the Trump administration is stepping up mass deportations, separating families at the U. S. -Mexico border, and interning immigrant children in cages, calls to abolish ICE have spread from a grass-roots Twitter phenomenon to the political mainstream. Multiple candidates for prominent elected positions have endorsed the movement, including New York congressional nominee Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a Democratic Socialist who ran on the issue. . .

Anton Woronczuk (2018-06-30). Can Trump Turn Back the Clock on Inequality? truthout.org "As your president, I will do everything in my power to protect our LGBTQ citizens from the violence and oppression of a hateful foreign ideology." These were the words of candidate Donald Trump's at the 2016 Republican National Convention, referencing the horrifying shooting massacre at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando, Florida, the month before. | Leaving aside the blatant racism and Islamophobia of his statement, the past year has shown that Trump's promise couldn't be further from the truth. | Trump's first year in office has been a political roller coaster, with a seemingly never-ending barrage of attacks against workers, the oppressed and the planet, punctuated by spontaneous explosions of protest and resistance. | And at a time when public opinion has largely shifted in solidarity with demands for LGBTQ equality, the Trump administration is carrying out policies that threaten to turn back…

Briahna Gray (2018-06-30). There's an Easy Answer to Why Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Won: Socialism. theintercept.com It seems no one can stop talking about Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the 28-year-old former bartender who ousted 10-time incumbent Rep. Joe Crowley from his seat in New York's 14th Congressional District last Tuesday. | But some people should. | As I've written before, each electoral contest between now and 2020 will scrutinized for its predictive value, parsed for insights into how to beat Trump. But some of the insights from the prognosticators who ignored the Ocasio-Cortez campaign until she won are, well, not very insightful. | Myriad horse-race callers seem hell-bent on divorcing Ocasio-Cortez's core ideology from any causal analysis of her win, with no discernible motive other than preserving the party's failing strategies, and the strategists paid to enact them, for another election cycle. Others downplay the radical nature of her policy platform by claiming her leftism for the center, and pretending…

Mark Sumner, Daily Kos (2018-06-29). Steele Dossier Says Information Went Both Ways Between Trump and Russia. alternet.org The information flow wasn't only to the president's campaign. | The Associated Press has compiled a list of the information provided in the list of memos authored by former British intelligence officer Christopher Steele, and compared it with what has been revealed through court filings and public statements. And while the AP finds what they believe to be "snippets of fiction" in the pages, they also find that a great deal of what Steele produced is proving to have a basis in fact. What has turned out to be true is the primary narrative thread that runs through all the memos — The Russian government set up an "elaborate operation" to damage Hillary Clinton in the 2016 election through social media, propaganda, and by stealing Democratic information and providing it to Trump. And the Russian government sought to aid Donald Trump,. . .

Jon Jeter (2018-06-29). How Democrats Could Turn Kennedy Replacement into Revival. mintpressnews.com Democrats could use a hot-button, and unpopular issue like the repeal of Roe v. The Conversation (2018-06-29). Why Are Democratic Voters So Much More Approving of Compromise Than Republicans? alternet.org Progressives have a friendlier view of change and "progress," and this difference in orientation is the predominant dynamic at work in politics. | At a time when political division is heightened and the parties in Washington are deeply polarized, it is worth asking whether there is any payoff for politicians to work together. | Will they be rewarded by their constituents for getting things done, balancing different interests for the public good and working across the aisle with civility and respect? | Or will they be punished for abandoning core principles, offering concessions to the other side and sitting down with people who view the world so differently? | Political scientists like us view compromise as an essential feature of our bicameral, three-branched political system. As the Movement to Abolish ICE Gains Mainstream Support, Fox News Goes into Attack Mode
Bobby Lewis, Media Matters | alternet.org | 2018-06-30
Fox has long led the media charge to defend ICE and its actions, frequently using the violent gang MS-13to demonize all immigrants. | Fox News is scrambling in response to the grass-roots movement to abolish Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), which has begun seeping into mainstream progressive and Democratic politics. Multiple candidates for prominent elected positions have endorsed the movement, including New York congressional nominee Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a Democratic Socialist who ran on the issue. . .

Can Trump Turn Back the Clock on Inequality?
Anton Woronczuk | truthout.org | 2018-06-30
"As your president, I will do everything in my power to protect our LGBTQ citizens from the violence and oppression of a hateful foreign ideology." These were the words of candidate Donald Trump's at the 2016 Republican National Convention, referencing the horrifying shooting massacre at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando, Florida, the month before.

There's an Easy Answer to Why Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Won: Socialism
Briahna Gray | theintercept.com | 2018-06-30
It seems no one can stop talking about Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the 28-year-old former bartender who ousted 10-time incumbent Rep.

Steele Dossier Says Information Went Both Ways Between Trump and Russia
Mark Sumner, Daily Kos | alternet.org | 2018-06-29
The information flow wasn't only to the president's campaign. And the Russian government sought to aid Donald Trump,. . .

Why Are Democratic Voters So Much More Approving of Compromise Than Republicans?
The Conversation | alternet.org | 2018-06-29
Progressives have a friendlier view of change and "progress," and this difference in orientation is the predominant dynamic at work in politics. The Resistance Before the #Resistance

Joe Crowley's Defeat Has a Lot to Do With Democratic Party Superdelegates

Rod Rosenstein Was Infuriated that Trump 'Manipulated Him' to Help in Comey's Firing: Report
