With Latest Syria Threats, Trump Continues to Be More Confrontational Toward Russia Than Obama Was
Glenn Greenwald | The Intercept | 2018-04-11
The civil war in Syria began in 2011 and escalated for five years during the Obama presidency, yet Barack Obama — despite demands from leaders of both parties and think tanks across the spectrum — never once bombed Syrian government targets. Although the CIA under Obama spent $1 billion per year to covertly train and fund Bashar al-Assad's enemies, it was never close to enough to topple him: just enough to keep the war going. | But Obama never bombed Assad or his military assets: a decision which, to this day, is scorned across official Washington. Hillary Clinton blasted Obama's refusal to do more to stop Assad, and in 2017, she actively encouraged Donald Trump to bomb Assad and take out his air force. | To this day, Obama regards his refusal to bomb Assad as one of his…

Travis Gettys, Raw Story | AlterNet.org | 2018-04-11
He's done all the damage he can. | House Speaker Paul Ryan will soon announce that he won't run for re-election, according to confidants. The 48-year-old Wisconsin Republican has privately told associates that he is leaving Congress after passing a tax reform bill late last year that favors wealthy campaign donors, reported Axios. The decision has been long rumored, the website reported, but he has not yet made a public decision. Ryan, a former vice presidential candidate, could make the announcement as soon as Wednesday, although friends say he may run again for another office. Republicans More Likely Than Democrats to Cheat on Wives — According to Data From World's Largest Site for Married Cheaters
Sarah Burris, Raw Story | AlterNet.org | 2018-04-11
"The Republican party has often touted its traditional values with a foundation based on Judeo-Christian ethics, ethics of course that do not align with adultery" | One thing that came out of the hack on Ashley Madison was the information that the site was overwhelmingly dominated by male users. Data is now revealing, however, that among those men using the site, the majority were Republicans. Ashley Madison is the world's leading website for married people seeking additional relationships. According to their numbers, for all of those conservatives who claim "family values," they're more apt to compromise their morality if it is expedient for them to do so. Mike Pompeo Could Go Down If Senate Democrats Decide to Fight
Ryan Grim | The Intercept | 2018-04-11
Democratic activists around the country have become energized by the nomination of Mike Pompeo as the new secretary of state, kicking off a bout of organizing around foreign policy that has little precedent outside the lead-up to an imminent invasion. | The question now is whether that enthusiasm will transfer to Senate Democrats themselves, or whether they will usher him through as they did in January 2017 when he was confirmed as CIA director. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., voted to confirm Pompeo last year. | Pompeo, a committed Islamophobe and war hawk, has galvanized opposition particularly for his hostility to the Iran nuclear deal, which Democrats see as a signature piece of the legacy of former President Barack Obama. Ripping up the deal, its advocates warn, would march the United States down a path that leads inevitably to war.

Republicans Accuse Zuckerberg and Facebook of Censoring Right Wingers, Reigniting Culture War on Liberal Media

U.S. Should Do the Opposite of What Saudis Want
Maj. Danny Sjursen | Truthdig: Expert Reporting, Current News, Provocative Columnists | 2018-04-11
Consider the irony: The United States, which bills itself as the world's beacon of freedom, has for some 70 years allied itself with one of the last absolute monarchies on the planet. Time and again, Washington has done the bidding of Saudi Arabia in the Greater Middle East, as a catalog of presidents allowed themselves to be dragged along by despotic kings in keffiyehs. It's downright embarrassing and a monument to American hypocrisy. So, you ask, why aren't mainstream, so-called liberals outright appalled by all this? Well, they're as hawkish and beholden to the military-industrial complex as the unapologetic Republicans. | Once, not too long ago, a cynic could argue that such supplication was necessary to feed a national addiction to the Saudis' liquid gold, but no more. How Facebook Played "Instrumental" Role in Rise of Burma's Ethnic Cleansing Campaign of Rohingya
Democracy Now! | 2018-04-11
In Burma, seven soldiers have been sentenced to 10 years in prison for participating in the massacre of Rohingya Muslims in the village of Inn Din in western Rakhine State. The bodies of 10 Rohingya men were discovered in a mass grave there last September. The victims are among thousands of Rohingya who have been killed by the Burmese military's ethnic cleansing campaign against the minority Muslim group. For years, activists have demanded Facebook regulate hate speech against Rohingya on its platform, saying this speech has contributed to the rise in violence against the persecuted community. Trump Slams FBI & AG Jeff Sessions After Agents Raid Home & Office of His Attorney, Michael Cohen
Democracy Now! | 2018-04-10
FBI agents have raided the home, office and Park Avenue hotel room of President Trump's longtime personal lawyer Michael Cohen. During the Monday morning raid, the FBI seized a slew of business records, emails and documents. The Washington Post reports Cohen is under investigation for bank fraud, wire fraud and campaign finance violations. Agents also reportedly seized documents related to a $130,000 payment Cohen made to adult film star Stephanie Clifford, also known as Stormy Daniels. Cohen has admitted to personally paying Clifford to keep her quiet about an alleged 2007 affair she had with Donald Trump. The payment, only days before the 2016 election, may violate federal election law. The raid was reportedly approved by the U.S. attorney of New York, Geoffrey Berman, who was handpicked by President Trump after Trump fired Preet Bharara. Berman is a former law partner of New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani. Monday's raid came after a referral by special counsel Robert Mueller. President Trump reacted angrily to news of the raid Monday. For more, we speak with Marcy Wheeler, an investigative journalist who runs the website EmptyWheel.net.

"A Very Dangerous Moment": Trump Threatens to Strike Syria as Warmonger John Bolton Joins Cabinet
Democracy Now! | 2018-04-10
President Trump has threatened a forceful response to this weekend's alleged chemical gas attack in Syria that killed at least 40 people and injured as many 1,000 in the rebel-held town of Douma. During a meeting with military officials Monday, Trump vowed to take action. Washington and its chief allies at the United Nations have blamed the Assad government for the chemical attack, but Russia claims there is no evidence an attack even took place. Meanwhile, Iran has acknowledged seven Iranians died in an Israeli airstrike on a Syrian base early on Monday. For more, we speak with Phyllis Bennis, a fellow at the Institute for Policy Studies, author of several books, including, most recently, "Understanding ISIS and the New Global War on Terror." But here is the snag. The laws of war prohibit subjecting detainees to "public curiosity." These prisoners — who have no lawyers — are in no position to freely answer questions before the cameras.
The raid was carried out by the U.S. attorney of New York, Geoffrey Berman, who was handpicked by President Trump after Trump fired Preet Bharara.

Denver Post Revolts Against Its "Vulture" Hedge-Fund Owner & Demands 126-Year-Old Newspaper Be Saved
Democracy Now! | 2018-04-10
The Denver Post has launched a revolt against its owner: New York-based hedge fund Alden Global Capital. On Sunday, The Denver Post's editorial board published a lead editorial headlined "As vultures circle, The Denver Post must be saved." Alden Global Capital is the parent company of Digital First Media, one of the country's largest newspaper chains. Since 2010, Digital First Media has slashed budgets and staff at newspapers across the country, including the Oakland Tribune, The San Jose Mercury News and the St. Paul Pioneer Press. Alden Global Capital is backed by founder and chief of investments Randall Smith and president Heath Freeman. Both are known on Wall Street as vulture capitalists who make their money investing in distressed businesses and selling them off. For more, we speak with Ricardo Baca, the former cannabis editor at The Denver Post, who wrote one of the op-eds, titled "When a hedge fund tries to kill the newspapers it owns, journalists must fight back." Baca worked at the Post for 16 years and is now the CEO and founder of Grasslands.

For more, we speak with Phyllis Bennis, a fellow at the Institute for Policy Studies, author of several books, including, most recently, "Understanding ISIS and the New Global War on Terror." Her latest piece for In These Times is headlined "It's John Bolton's First Day in the White House. We Must Stop Him from Escalating War in Syria."

This non-binding resolution, combined with recent statements from the US Embassy in Addis, sends a strong signal to Ethiopia's new prime minister that the US expects significant reforms ahead. | Resolution 128 was passed in large part because of Ethiopian-American voters concerned with the Ethiopian government's rights record, who worked together to make themselves an important constituency. Where Are All the U.S. Oligarchs With Links to Washington?
Jeff Cohen | Truthdig: Expert Reporting, Current News, Provocative Columnists | 2018-04-10
TV news shows are good at getting viewers riled up. Day and night, I hear the anchors on CNN and MSNBC getting us riled up about the schemes of this or that "Russian oligarch with links to the Kremlin." I've heard that phrase incessantly in recent weeks. | And plenty of others have heard the "Russian oligarch" phrase. Merriam-Webster.com reported that "oligarch" was one of its most searched-for words on April 5 "following reports that Robert Mueller had questioned Russian businessmen to whom this descriptor applies." | But here's a phrase I haven't heard from any of the purportedly progressive hosts on MSNBC: "A U.S. oligarch with links to Washington." | That avoidance is revealing when one considers an indisputable fact: U.S. oligarchs have done far more to undermine U.S. democracy than any Russian. | Take, for example, Brian L. Roberts–who certainly…

Ex-Massey Energy CEO Don Blankenship Will Try for a Senate Seat in Coal Country
Truthout Stories | 2018-04-10
Just when you think the GOP has scraped the bottom of the barrel with political candidates — like, say, Roy Moore — they manage to surprise us again. Democrat Joe Manchin's competitor in the race for one of West Virginia's senate seats is none other than Don Blankenship. | If his name doesn't ring a bell, that might be because Blankenship has spent the last nine months in jail. He's the disgraced former CEO of Massey Energy, as in, the energy company responsible for a coal mining disaster that killed 29 people in 2010. The company had racked up over one thousand warnings about unsafe conditions prior to the incident. | West Virginia is coal country, so is it really a good move for a man who became the public figurehead…

Is "Sorry" Enough? Facebook Built Empire on Harvesting Personal Information with Little Oversight
Democracy Now! | 2018-04-10
Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg is set to testify today on Capitol Hill amid the burgeoning scandal about how the voter-profiling company Cambridge Analytica harvested the data of more than 87 million Facebook users, without their permission, in efforts to sway voters to support President Donald Trump. In prepared remarks ahead of his testimony today, he writes, "We didn't take a broad enough view of our responsibility, and that was a big mistake. … It was my mistake, and I'm sorry. I started Facebook, I run it, and I'm responsible for what happens here." The company has also unveiled new privacy tools ahead of Zuckerberg's testimony today. For more, we speak with David Dayen, a contributor to The Intercept and columnist for The New Republic. His recent pieces include "Ban Targeted Advertising" and "The U.S. Government Is Finally Scrambling to Regulate Facebook."
