Bigoted Election Campaigns, Not Terror Attacks, Drive Anti-Muslim Activity.
Murtaza Hussain | The Intercept | 2018-03-11
," tracks more than 650 separate anti-Muslim incidents across the country since 2012. These incidents include public denunciations of Islam and Muslims by elected officials, proposed laws targeting Muslim religious practice, mosque vandalism, and acts of violence. | According to the data, these incidents have markedly increased in recent years, with public attitudes toward Islam and Muslims darkening significantly. But it's not clear that these attitudes are being driven solely by acts of terrorism committed by Muslims. Several major terrorist attacks that took place during the period of the study did not produce a surge in recorded anti-Muslim incidents. Those attacks that did coincide with increased anti-Muslim incidents came in particular political contexts. The largest spike in the incidents came after the November 2015 terrorist strike in Paris, but the attack at the Bataclan came as the 2016 presidential campaign was getting into…

The Domestic Right-Wing Terror Threat Depicted in 'Homeland' Is Real.
David Masciotra, Salon | AlterNet.org | 2018-03-10
The counterterrorism drama is unfolding its most relevant story this season. | Beliefs have consequences. If I believe that I can expect heavenly reward if I martyr myself in the murder of infidels, I'm likelier to fly an airplane into a building. If I suffer from the psychotic delusion that I am a bird, I am likelier to jump off a building. One of the reasons that the policies of democratic socialism have failed to rally a majority of Americans is due to the belief — the fantasy — of the "American dream. " As John Steinbeck said, "The poor do not see themselves as an exploited proletariat, but as temporarily embarrassed millionaires. Imagine If Trump Were a Democrat–What Would the Republicans Say?

If this has occurred during Obama's presidency, conservatives would have been howling for impeachment. | Much has been made of the investigation by special counsel Robert Mueller into whether Donald Trump's presidential campaign colluded with Russian operatives or the Russian government to win the November 2016 election. While there is yet to emerge solid evidence that attempted Russian meddling actually impacted the election's outcome, in recent days Mueller's probe may have turned in a far more damning direction: how Trump's family members may have used the president's political power to obtain business advantages, and specifically how Trump son-in-law Jared Kushner may be deeply implicated. Several recent reports offer strong suggestions of corruption. Are Republicans Finally Turning on Trump?
Heather Digby Parton, Salon | AlterNet.org | 2018-03-09
Republicans fear Trump's "trade war"–but the real danger is that he finally understands presidential power. | One of the more revealing dramas of the past year has been the spectacle of the Republican Party weakly wrestling with the Donald Trump phenomenon and then deciding to accommodate this erratic incompetent in the hopes that they could steer him toward pillaging the nation's shared wealth, their raison d'être. Republicans have so far been unable to repeal the Affordable Care Act, but they have successfully sabotaged it in numerous ways. Toxic Coal Ash Being Dumped in Puerto Rico, Which Already Suffers Worst Drinking Water in the Nation.
Democracy Now! | 2018-03-09
Even before Hurricane Maria struck the island nearly six months ago, the majority of Puerto Rico's residents lived with water that violated health standards set by the U.S. law. Since the storm, residents say the situation has only gotten worse. Among the sources of potential water contamination are mountains of coal ash generated by a coal-fired power plant owned by a private company called AES. For years, residents have demanded the company stop dumping toxic coal ash into their community, saying the waste is poisonous to their health and the environment. We speak with Mekela Panditharatne, a lawyer with the Natural Resources Defense Council who just returned from the island and wrote an op-ed in The Washington Post headlined "FEMA says most of Puerto Rico has potable water. America Is Waking Up to the Stupidity of Being Wasteful with Plastic.
Valerie Vande Panne, AlterNet | AlterNet.org | 2018-03-09
Plastic trash kills sea animals, contaminates the environment and it's gross. Do we need more reasons to get rid of it? | It's time to kiss the plastics goodbye. No, not the Mean Girls; I mean the plastics you use every day: straws, lids, containers, bags, even clothing, for goodness sake. While a plastic clothing ban is a bit far off right now (though there is a movement to reduce its use), more urgently, many states and municipalities are campaigning to ban plastic bags, straws and lids, which are choking our oceans, killing ocean creatures and corals, and grossly polluting the environment. New York state is considering a plastic bag ban, proposed by two state senators. (New York City approved a ban over a year ago, but Democratic governor Andrew Cuomo killed the proposal. ) The state proposal would ban plastic bags and. . .

That can't be true."

America's Troll Farm Media.
Gerald Sussman | counterpunch.org | 2018-03-09
Despite all the smoke and mirrors, most Americans seem to see where the stenographers of corporate capitalism are taking us. A recent Gallup poll found that while 84% of Americans see media as "critical" or "very important" to democracy, only 28% see the corporatist mainstream news media (MSM) as actually supporting democracy. They're right on both counts of course. The quality of a democracy is only as good as the information people have to make informed judgements about public policy and politicians.
