Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin Says He'll Vote for Gina Haspel Despite Her History with Torture
Cody Fenwick, AlterNet | alternet.org | 2018-05-09
The West Virginia senator's vote all but guarantees that Haspel will be confirmed as CIA director. | West Virginia Democrat Sen. Joe Manchin will vote to confirm Gina Haspel as CIA director, despite her history of involvement with the agency's torture methods — euphemistically called "enhanced interrogation" — carried out during President George W. Bush's administration. The majority of Senate Democrats are expected to vote against Haspel, who is currently serving as the acting CIA director. Haspel's involvement in torture, as well as in the destruction of tapes that documented these practices that have since been deemed illegal, became a flashpoint of controversy following her nomination by President Donald Trump. Kentucky's Sen. Rand Paul is the only Republican expected to vote against the nomination, and Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) is not expected to vote as he is out of town due to poor health.

Redistricting and the 2018 Elections: Can Democrats Stop the GOP's Winning Streak?
truth-out.org | truth-out.org | 2018-05-09
(Photo: adamkaz / iStock / Getty Images Plus) | The 2018 elections will affect who draws the political maps for redistricting after the 2020 census. Republicans understood this 10 years ago and implemented a strategy that led to a decade of Democratic Party defeats at nearly every level of government. Now Democrats are seeking to reverse this trend, but no matter how the balance of power shifts, this form of partisan gerrymandering is a problem for representative democracy.(Photo: adamkaz / iStock / Getty Images Plus) | The four states that held primaries last night for the coming 2018 elections — Ohio, Indiana, North Carolina and West Virginia — are overwhelmingly controlled by the GOP. Republicans control all eight state legislative bodies within them, with 396 Republican state legislators compared with 189 Democrats. Three of the four states are

U.S. Hypocrisy Creates Perpetual Enemies and Forever War
Maj. Danny Sjursen | truthdig.com | 2018-05-09
In foreign policy, Americans like to keep it simple. Good countries versus bad countries. Democracies versus dictatorships. Of course, as Ronald Reagan reminded Americans, we are a "shining city upon a hill," one of the goodies. What no one seems to ask is whether idealistic Americans have a clear view of the world as it is, or how their worldview affects the United States' global image. Surely, as the U.S. enters its 17th year of perpetual war, these might be questions worth pursuing. Problem is, the truth can be disturbing. | So humor me for a moment and join me on a tour of American hypocrisy and naiveté, from Africa to the South Pacific. | Let's begin with the big boys. | ? "The Calvert County Sheriff's Office has reportedly been "flooded with phone calls" regarding the sign. "I hate that billboard," one woman said, explaining that it frightened her son. "I think it's very threatening. I don't like it at all. ""I'm a Republican but I think it's a little offensive," Kelly Mazzella offered. Trita Parsi, head of the National Iranian American Council, says he was targeted by an Israeli private intelligence agency over his support for the Iran nuclear deal. The agency, Black Cube, was hired to orchestrate a "dirty ops" campaign against members of the Obama administration who negotiated the nuclear agreement. The Guardian reports Trump's aides hired Black Cube; The New York Times says it's not yet clear who hired the intelligence firm. Among those Black Cube was hired to investigate and discredit were Obama's top national security aide Benjamin Rhodes and Vice President Joe Biden's national security adviser Colin Kahl. Black Cube is made up of former officials from the Mossad and other Israeli agencies. It is the same firm hired by disgraced Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein to stop publication of articles that exposed him as a sexual predator.

Convicted Coal CEO Don Blankenship Blames Trump for His Loss After Running Wildly Racist Campaign

The rogue GOP candidates attacked Senate majority leader for having relatives who are Chinese. | West Virginia GOP Senate candidate and disgraced coal CEO Don Blankenship blamed President Donald Trump Tuesday night as he conceded that he had decisively lost the state's primary election. Senate Investigators Say Russian Hackers Could Have Altered or Deleted Voter Registration Data Before the 2016 Election

A Pro-Choice Woman Is Running Against a Male Democrat Who Voted to Restrict Abortion. Why Are Women's Groups Silent?

Cecile Richards on Attacks on Women's Health, from Iowa Abortion Ban to Rising Violence at Clinics
Democracy Now! | democracynow.org | 2018-05-08
On Friday, Iowa's governor signed one of the nation's most restrictive abortion bills. The new law requires any woman seeking an abortion to undergo an abdominal ultrasound. The law bans abortion if a fetal heartbeat is detected, which often occurs at six weeks–before many women even know they are pregnant. Meanwhile, in South Carolina, Democratic lawmakers used a filibuster to defeat a Republican abortion ban that would have prohibited as many as 97 percent of abortions in the state. This comes as a federal appeals court ruled last month that an Indiana abortion law signed by Vice President Mike Pence when he was the state's governor in 2016 was unconstitutional. The law restricted a woman's ability to seek an abortion, including in cases where the child would be born with a disability. For more on the attacks to women's reproductive rights nationwide, we…

Journalists Rise Up Against Wall Street Hedge Fund Decimating Newsrooms Across the Country
Democracy Now! | democracynow.org | 2018-05-08
Journalists are orchestrating a rising rebellion against censorship and layoffs implemented by the nation's second-largest newspaper chain, Digital First Media, and the New York-based hedge fund that controls it, Alden Global Capital. Reporters from Digital First publications around the country will rally outside Alden Global Capital's office here in New York City to demand that the hedge fund either invest in its newspapers or sell them. The hedge fund is known for slashing and downsizing its papers to maintain high profit margins. Since 2010, Digital First Media has cut budgets and staffs at newspapers across the country, including the Oakland Tribune, the San Jose Mercury News and the St. Paul Pioneer Press. In recent months, Digital First Media cut 30 percent of the newsroom at The Denver Post. Meanwhile, the private company reported profits of almost $160 million in 2017 and a 17…

Giuliani Takes Cash to Speak to Terrorist Cult; Media Find This Unnoteworthy
Adam Johnson | fair.org | 2018-05-07

This was seen again this past week when a number of major outlets reported on a speech Trump advisor Rudy Giuliani gave at an MEK conference; the outlets failed to note that the group is widely loathed inside Iran, and seen as an illegitimate cult by experts across ideological lines. | The MEK has next to no support in Iran itself, where it's hated for working with Israeli intelligence and fighting…

Who is Afraid of Venezuelan Democracy?
Maria Paez Victor | counterpunch.org | 2018-05-07
It is astounding, and sinister, that the European Parliament on May 3 passed a resolution (492 in favour, 87 against, 77 abstentions) demanding that Venezuela suspend the presidential elections slated for May 20. Do these European countries think that they are still colonial powers that can demand anything from other countries? Does European arrogance stretch to…

Deep State 101: A Primer and Prescription
Geoff Dutton | counterpunch.org | 2018-05-07
Every nation worth its salt has a deep state, a loose network of rich and powerful players who ratify, veto or formulate state social, economic and military policies. Whether monarchy, dictatorship, or constitutional republic, no government worthy of the name lacks for a shadowy unelected elite with hands on the tiller and in the till,…
