How Andrew Cuomo Failed Student Borrowers
David Dayen | The Intercept | 2018-04-07
This week, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo brokered a deal between warring factions of his own party. The Independent Democratic Conference, a breakaway group of eight senators that had been caucusing with Republicans in Albany, agreed to come back to the Democratic fold. | Political watchers in New York labeled it a cynical and self-serving move. It also came too late to assist student-loan activists in a signature battle that fell just short for the second straight year. | The reunification came after years in which the IDC maintained the Senate majority for Republicans, blocking progressive legislation from advancing. But pressure has been building, with serious primary challenges against seven IDC members and an insurgent threat from actress and activist Cynthia Nixon against Cuomo himself. | The reunification may succeed in draining some of the energy from those challenges, and with…

BOSTON–Assault weapons and large-capacity magazines are not protected by the Second Amendment, a federal judge said in a ruling Friday upholding Massachusetts' ban on the weapons. | U.S. District Judge William Young dismissed a lawsuit challenging the 20-year-old ban, saying assault weapons are military firearms that fall beyond the reach of the constitutional right to "bear arms." | Regulation of the weapons is a matter of policy, not for the courts, he said. | "Other states are equally free to leave them unregulated and available to their law-abiding citizens," Young said. "These policy matters are simply not of constitutional moment. Americans are not afraid of bumptious, raucous and robust debate about these matters. We call it democracy." | State Attorney General Maura Healey said the ruling "vindicates the right of the people of Massachusetts to protect themselves from these weapons of war."

"On Friday, Earhardt was discussing a series of sanctions imposted on Russian oligarchs and government officials, including Oleg Deripaska–the Russia oil tycoon who was offered "private briefings" by former Donald Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort during the 2016 presidential election. Congressman Ralph Norman (R-SC) won a June 2017 special election for the seat vacated by Mick Mulvaney when he joined Donald Trump's administration. Rep. Norman brandished the . 38-caliber Smith & Wesson handgun at a diner, and left it on the table for several minutes. "I'm not going to be a Gabby Giffords," Rep. Norman claimed. A Neuroscientist Explains What Could Be Wrong with Trump Supporters' Brains
Bobby Azarian, Raw Story, Raw Story | AlterNet.org | 2018-04-07
Trump has said things that would be political suicide for any other Republican. | There's no doubt that Donald Trump has said many things that would have been political suicide for any other Republican. And almost every time he made one of these shocking statements, political analysts on both the left and the right predicted that he'd lose supporters because of it. But as we have clearly seen over the past year, they were dead wrong every time. Trump appears to be almost totally bulletproof. The only thing that might be more perplexing than the psychology of Donald Trump is the psychology of his supporters. In their eyes, The Donald can do no wrong. Even Trump himself seems to be astonished by this phenomenon. "I could stand in the middle of Fifth Avenue and shoot somebody, and I wouldn't lose any. . .

Hill and Don's Honduran Caravan
Paul Street | counterpunch.org | 2018-04-06
You've got to hand it to Hillary Clinton. In 2016, she helped put the right-wing racist, sexist, nativist, authoritarian, and nationalist oligarch Donald Trump in the White House. She and her operatives did this in two ways: (1) by rigging the presidential primaries against the popular progressive Democrat Bernie Sanders, the Democrats' best chance to prevail over Trump; (2) by mounting a dreadfully uninspiring and transparently tone-deaf, neoliberal general election campaign — a reflection of her massive funding by the nation's corporate and financial establishment, including big business money normally slated for Republican presidential candidates.

Study: No Relation Between Immigration and Crime

A Timely Tale of Taxes and Toys 'R' Us
Sam Pizzigati | MintPress News | 2018-04-06
The orthodoxy that dominates today's Republican Party — and the ranks of "business-friendly" Democrats — rests on a simple approach to economic policy. Let's be nice, this orthodoxy holds, to rich people. | Let's be particularly nice at tax time. Let's keep taxes on rich people, conservatives advise us, as low as possible. High taxes on high incomes, they argue, discourage entrepreneurship. No one with a great idea for a new business enterprise is going to start that business, their argument goes, if Uncle Sam is just going to tax away the rewards that a new business could bring. | And the same goes for investors. They're not going to invest in "job-creating" enterprises, the conservative orthodoxy insists, if high taxes threaten to eat away at their potential earnings. | This conservative take of taxes works wonderfully for sound bites — and…

Travels With Beto: A Progressive Live-Streaming His Campaign Is Closing in on Ted Cruz
Steven Rosenfeld, AlterNet | AlterNet.org | 2018-04-06
The congressman from El Paso has raised $6. 7 million with a genuine grassroots campaign. | One of 2018's most remarkable campaign stories is unfolding on the back roads and small-town squares of rural Texas, where Democratic Rep. Beto O'Rourke, a three-term congressman from El Paso, is within striking distance of unseating arguably the nation's most despised senator, Texas Republican Ted Cruz. The most visible marker of O'Rourke's success is his announcement this month that he raised $6. 7 million in small donations from 141,000 people, breaking a three-decade record for the most money raised in a reporting period in a Texas U. S. Senate race. O'Rourke isn't taking any political action committee money, because he's a progressive who doesn't want strings attached. Even Cruz, who just launched his re-election bid, acknowledged O'Rourke's fundraising. But true to Cruz's negativity drenched form, his first statewide radio. . .

Trump Inks Arms Deal with Saudis as Humanitarian Crisis Rages in Yemen & Saudi Prince Tours U.S
Democracy Now! | 2018-04-06
On Thursday, the Trump administration told Congress it has approved a $1.3 billion artillery sale to Saudi Arabia. This is the second weapons deal between the U.S. and Riyadh in as many months and has sparked concern from human rights groups, who warn the deals may make the United States complicit in war crimes committed in the Saudi-led bombing campaign in Yemen. Lawmakers have 30 days to act before the sale is final. The announcement comes as Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman wraps up his whirlwind tour of the United States. One topic that has received relatively little media attention during his trip is his role in escalating Saudi Arabia's military involvement in Yemen. Last month marked three years since the U.S.-backed, Saudi-led coalition began its military offensive in Yemen, leading to one of the world's worst humanitarian crises. Brazil's Popular Ex-President Lula Ordered to Prison After Politically Motivated Trial & Conviction
Democracy Now! | 2018-04-06
A judge on Thursday ordered former Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva to turn himself in to police within 24 hours and begin serving a 12-year sentence for a controversial corruption conviction, effectively removing him from Brazil's presidential election later this year, where he was the front-runner. Lula is a former union leader who served as president of Brazil from 2003 to 2010. During that time, he helped lift tens of millions of Brazilians out of poverty. His supporters say the ruling against him is a continuation of the coup that ousted Lula's ally Dilma Rousseff from power last year. We play excerpts from our recent interview with Lula and get an update from Mark Weisbrot, co-director of the Center for Economic and Policy Research and president of Just Foreign Policy, who argues "the investigation is political, and that everything [Judge Moro is] trying to do is political, including the latest order that Lula surrender today."

Judge Suspends Release of Herman Bell, Elderly Black Panther Jailed 45 Years, Amid Police Pressure
Democracy Now! | 2018-04-06
A judge in New York has suspended the release of Herman Bell, a 70-year-old prisoner who has been granted parole after 45 years in prison. Bell was sentenced to 25 years to life in prison for the killing of two New York City police officers in 1971. At the time, he was a member of the Black Liberation Army and a former Black Panther. Since then, he has mentored thousands of young men while behind bars and kept a clean disciplinary record. State-mandated tests show he would pose the lowest possible risk if he is allowed to re-enter society. In March, the New York Parole Board granted parole for Bell, noting he had expressed remorse and was likely to lead a "law-abiding life." State law requires commissioners to consider such factors, but they've only recently started to comply. On Wednesday, a state judge…

5 Ways Liberals and Progressives Shame the Poor Without Even Realizing It
Alex Henderson, AlterNet | AlterNet.org | 2018-04-06
Conservatives aren't the only ones with a nasty habit of humiliating lower-income earners. | The Republican Party has a long history of denouncing America's poor as freeloading parasites, living off the hard work and innovation of the rich while contributing nothing to society. The left, meanwhile, offers a more inclusive and egalitarian perspective, arguing that more poor Americans could join the middle class with the right education, training and opportunities. Too often, however, liberals and progressives end up shaming those they intend to help, criticizing lower-income earners for everything from their dietary choices to their inability to make charitable donations. And in so doing, they're only adding to the misery of one of the country's most vulnerable populations. Below are five ways in which liberals and progressives shame the poor without even realizing it. 1. Diet-shaming from organic food proponents. Leftists are often vocal proponents. . .

The Town That Accidentally Legalized Marijuana
Jon Walker | The Intercept | 2018-04-05
Turner is a quaint, conservative town on the outskirts of Salem, Oregon. It's a village that, by a margin of two to one, supported Donald Trump over Hillary Clinton in 2016. In 2014, when a referendum on legalizing marijuana throughout Oregon came before the people of the town, they rejected it handily, with 57 percent voting "no." | It passed statewide anyway, and in 2016 the people of Turner were again asked to vote on weed. This time the question was whether to allow recreational marijuana businesses in their community. To nobody's surprise, they voted overwhelmingly — 63 percent — to prohibit the businesses in the unincorporated parts of their county. But to everybody's surprise, this time, the town voted 51 percent in favor of allowing pot businesses within the city limits. "We were actually shocked," Mayor Gary Tiffin told me. | The…

Caravan of Central American Migrants Holds a Mirror to Cruel U.S. Immigration Policy & Imperialism
Democracy Now! | 2018-04-05
Despite efforts by Mexican immigration authorities to disband a caravan of Central American migrants, hundreds are still bound for the U.S.-Mexico border. This comes after an early-morning tweet from President Trump that said the caravan "is largely broken up thanks to the strong immigration laws of Mexico and their willingness to use them so as not to cause a giant scene." The group People Without Borders, or Pueblo Sin Fronteras, has organized the caravan since 2010 to draw attention to the right to seek asylum and refuge. This year its members are disproportionately from Honduras, which remains in political upheaval after U.S.-backed right-wing President Juan Orlando Hernández was inaugurated for a second term despite allegations of widespread election-rigging in November. We get an update from Arturo Vizcarra, a volunteer with People Without Borders. He just returned from the caravan.

Trump Escalates Already-Deadly U.S. Border Policies, Ordering National Guard to Mexican Border
Democracy Now! | 2018-04-05
A new wave of troops could soon be deployed to the U.S.-Mexico border, even as border crossings by undocumented immigrants are at their lowest levels since 1971. The move comes as a caravan of Central American migrants and asylum seekers in Mexico has prompted a series of threats from President Trump. Meanwhile, The Wall Street Journal reports the Trump administration is requesting that the U.S. military build walls for at least one military base along the U.S.-Mexico border. We go to Tucson, Arizona, for an update from Todd Miller, a border security journalist and author of "Storming the Wall: Climate Change, Migration, and Homeland Security."
